Murielle Lucie Clément is an independent artist and scholar, a theater director and writer based in Amsterdam. She plays Mère Folle, sings period songs, and runs a tight ship during the trial of which she is president.
Ursula Neubauer as Vieille Folle
Ursula Neubauer plays Vieille Folle, an angry figure who criticizes Françoise’s apparent indifference to the witch hunts of her time. She also displays great traditional knowledge of herbal medicine.
Matthew Wright as TS Eliot
Matthew Wright is TS Eliot. With a hint of nostalgia for a grander Europe from before the advent of psychoanalysis, he pontificates on “high dreams” and the recycling of words and ideas.
Claude Mercier Ythier as the mysterious man with Pipe
Claude Mercier Ythier is the mysterious man with Pipe who remains unidentified. Later, he turns out to be a craftsman, restoring ancient musical instruments. He helps Françoise back on her feet.
John Neubauer as Ludwig Wittgenstein
John Neubauer plays Ludwig Wittgenstein, a slightly pompous Professor of Philosophy. He recognized in Françoise a kindred spirit, whenever she uses terms from his writings.
Thierry Gary as The Scribe
A stickler for procedure, the Scribe at the Trial collects evidence, takes notes and looks on in total earnestness. He will later reappear as La Boétie, a French 16th century writer.
